Instructor: Scott Skinner – No Sew Paper Yoshizumi & Rokkaku Kites
Day & Time: Friday 8:30 AM, Class #9
Class Size: Limit 15
Cost: $20.00
Description:
Morning session, students will make a 1/2 size Buka, Kaku or Suruga kite (approx. 12″ X 9″), learning the techniques required for the full-size kites coming next. Using their own paper, a mix of provided paper and their own, or their own art-on-paper, students will use pre-cut bamboo to make the Japanese kites. They will learn construction sequence, gluing ideas, re-enforcement ideas, bridling techniques and flying skills.
Afternoon session, students will make a “full size” Yoshizumi Rokkaku or Sode kite (approx. 27″ X 24″). Using their own prepared paper, a combination of their own and provided papers, or their own decorative papers, students will build a full-size sheet that can made directly into the final kite. Students will learn “full size” folding, gluing, reenforcing, bridling and flying skills for this beautiful kite!
What to bring: Students can bring their own scissors and if they have special paper that
they’d like to use, they should bring that.
I will bring a large supply of paper, white glue, scissors, razor cutters, line, and rulers, so
everything should be there on the table for people to work.
Large kites will be approx. 24” X 30″, smaller ones, about 24″ X 18″.
Go to “Paper Source” on the internet, search, “Craft”, then look for “Handmade paper”.
You’ll find a good listing of the papers they carry. I’ve used their marbled paper, their
Lokta paper from Nepal is very nice, and many that are labeled “handmade” I’ve found to
be appropriate for these larger-format kites. Many of these can be a bit expensive, but
you’ll use only one or two per kite and their beauty is well worth it.
