Instructor:  Lindsey Johnson – Fortuna “Falena” Fantasma yard art

Day & Time:  Friday 8:30 AM, Class #4

Class Size:  Limit 12

Cost:   $25.00 per Falena, pole not included

Description:  The Falena, Italian for a moth, was a collaborative design project between
Nic O’Neill and Lindsey Johnson. From a pile of Tyvek scraps, an idea sketched on a
paper napkin came the concept of a ground display. The two started to build on the idea,
and in a few weeks sails were cut the tails sewn and fittings were engineered and 3D
printed.
The display was first presented on the beaches of Lincoln City during the 2016 Fall Kite
Festival, followed by a display at the AKA National Convention in Seaside, Oregon.
Lindsey and Nic’s “Eclipse of Falenas” were entered in the People’s Choice “Best
Accessory” category where they won top honors.
The Falena has gone through many iterations and continues to evolve. From the original
Tyvek construction to laser-cut ripstop nylon fabric, painted organza tails and, of course,
custom 3D printed fittings. Lindsey and Ronda Brewer have worked together to simplify
the construction and sewing techniques. Lindsey, Nic and Ronda are excited to share
their passion for the creative and collaborative process.
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to build a few Falenas and decorative
pole sleeves for yourself. During the class you will learn a quick and easy technique for
sewing organza, painting on ripstop, and how 3D printing can be used to construct kites
and ground displays. Extra parts will be available to take home so you can construct your
own Eclipse of Falenas.
The main portion of the workshop will be focused on the construction of the Falena. If
time allows we will have pre-cut rolls of organza for streamers to enhance your display.
Color Choice: You will select your wing patterns in advance. Paint colors will be chosen
in the class. You may even want to purchase your own Design Master spray paint for
future Falenas and other projects.

What to bring:  Sewing Machine, thread, ripper, scissors, and regular sewing supplies.
The project is $25 per Falena. This included pre-cut wings, organza tail, and 3D printed
fitting. The (2) – 36” fiberglass poles and ferrule are not included. We will have some
available for purchase. Sources for purchasing will be provided.
Size: The winged portion of the project is approximately 16” high by 24” long with a 50”
organza tail.

Experience level:  Beginner and up
