Instructor:  Lindsey Wisdom-Johnson – SOS to OKR: A Gibson Girl Box Kite Revival

Day & Time:  Friday 8:30 AM, Class #5

Class Size:  12

Cost:  $110.00

Description:  In this full-day workshop, you’ll build a modern revival of the iconic WWII Gibson Girl rescue kite – redesigned using contemporary tools and materials. The finished kite spans approximately 1500mm (59”) in length, 376mm (14.8”) in height and 925mm (36.4”) wingtip-to-wingtip.

Inspired by the folding properties of the original Gibson Girl design, this version features a 3D printed folding spider hub, laser-cut fabric panels and carbon fiber framing. The addition of winglets gives the kite a fresh aerodynamic twist while honoring the practical ingenuity of the original.

Students will assemble two classic box structures joined by tensioned longerons, resulting in a compact portable kite with modern flair. We’ll also explore the history of the Gibson Girl kite and how modern design tools like Fusion 360, 3D printing and laser cutting can re-imagine vintage solutions.

What to bring:  Sewing machine, notions and cutting mat.

Experience level:  Intermediate and up
